A few words about Progesterone

Progesterone is a natural hormone secreted by the corpus luteum and the placenta. It participates in the normal function of the hypothalamic - pituitary - gonadal axis, along with estrogen and is involved in the ovulation cycle. In the second half of the menstrual cycle, progesterone promotes the growth of endometrial blood vessels and its thickening. It prepares the endometrium for the implantation of the fertilized egg and welcomes the fetus so that it can grow safely. A progesterone (PdG) test can help you determine if your ovulation has been successful. 

Let’s take as an example a cycle of 28 days (the first day of bleeding is the beginning of the cycle). Under normal circumstances, progesterone levels during the follicular phase (the first half of the cycle) are always low. Ovulation occurred 24-48 hours after peak and the follicle that released the egg closed to form the corpus luteum and secrete progesterone. In the early stages of pregnancy, progesterone is still produced by the corpus luteum and is essential for supporting pregnancy. With the establishment of the full function of the placenta between the 8th and the 12th week of pregnancy, progesterone is secreted by the placenta.
